    A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Born in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on 15th October, 1931, Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, more commonly known as Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, has been the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007, and also one of the country s most distinguished scientists with many honorary titles bestowed upon him. Dr. Kalam has worked for DRDO as an aeronautical engineer before his term as President, along with being a part of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Apart from that, he has also been heavily responsible for development of SLV-III, India s first satellite launch vehicle. He has received numerous medals and honors, that include the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat Ratna. He s also known popularly as the Missile Man, for his work on space rocket technology and ballistic missile development, his role in India s Pokhran-II nuclear missile test in 1998.
