Gautam Buddha was also known by the name Tathagat. Gautam Buddha strongly opposed the caste system in the propagation of his principles. He emphasized on the equality of man and man. Instead of considering birth, he has considered the basis of intelligence and character as the criteria of being small or big. He also declared that a man is not a Brahmin or a Shudra by birth, but by his deeds.
