Sardar Patel, the first home minister of independent India and titled 'Iron Man', was a prominent member of the Congress. He played an important role in the freedom movement with the aim of achieving complete independence. The greatness and unity of India remained his guiding star throughout his political career. Sardar Patel was a staunch critic of the British policy of 'divide and rule' by creating internal differences between the two communities. Maintaining the unity of India was his biggest concern. Lord Mountbatten announced his plan on June 3, 1947. In this, the principle of partition was approved. This plan was accepted by the Congress and the Muslim League. Sardar Patel said that he consented to the partition because he firmly believed that '(the rest of) India must now be divided in order to keep it united'. Presented on the basis of Sardar Patel's detailed correspondence, a detailed description has been given in the light of the evidence, under what circumstances and for what reasons the partition of India took place, the state of mind of the Indian leaders and the state of the society at that time. An important book describing the authentic history of the dark chapter of the partition of India.
